Guide & Advice

Everything you need to know to choose your Bahr-Bikini.

From choosing the right model to fabric care — everything you need to know to make the most of your French modest swimsuit.

Chapter 01

How to choose your burkini?

6 essential criteria to make the right choice for your modest swimsuit.

Opacity when wet

The number one criterion, often overlooked. Check that the manufacturer certifies opacity when wet. Bahr-Bikini tests all fabrics under full immersion.

Real UPF certification

UPF 50+ must be obtained in an accredited laboratory according to EN 13758-1 standards. Be wary of undocumented claims.

Chlorine resistance

If you use pools regularly, chemical resistance is essential. Our technical jersey is formulated to resist chlorine.

Freedom of movement

Check the armholes and the bi-elasticity of the fabric. A good burkini should never restrict swimming.

Cut for your body shape

Look for brands that have genuinely redesigned their cuts for each size. Bahr-Bikini offers S to XXL with adapted cuts.

Lightweight in water

A good burkini should not become heavy in water. Our technical jersey stays light even during full immersion.

Chapter 02

Understanding UPF 50+ protection.

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor — the UV protection index for clothing. A UPF 50+ blocks over 98% of UVA and UVB rays. It is the equivalent of SPF for garments.

Unlike sunscreen applied to exposed skin, a UPF garment protects mechanically through its fabric structure. This protection is immediate, with no risk of missed spots, resistant to water.

Important: For a swimsuit, the UPF certification must be maintained when wet. All Bahr-Bikini fabrics meet this requirement and are tested in an accredited laboratory.

Chapter 03

Activity-specific advice.

Beach & sea swimming

Always rinse with fresh water as soon as you leave the sea. Salt crystallises in the fibres and degrades them. Choose the one-piece for waves.

Pool swimming

Wet your swimsuit with fresh water before entering the pool — absorbs less chlorinated water. Rinse immediately after every session.

Surfing & water sports

Always choose the one-piece — it cannot split apart during wipeouts. Check armhole range of motion for paddling.

Travelling

Lightweight fabric with ultra-fast drying — ideal for travel. Pack two swimsuits for stays longer than one week.

Chapter 04

Caring for your modest swimsuit.

Proper care after each use is key to preserving your Bahr-Bikini’s technical properties and UPF 50+ certification.

✓ Rinse immediately in cold water

After every use — removes chlorine, salt and sunscreen before they degrade the fibres.

✓ Wash at 30°C on delicate cycle

By hand or machine. Mild liquid detergent without enzymes or oxidising agents.

✓ Press without wringing

Gently press without using a centrifugal spin. Wringing damages jersey fibres.

✓ Dry flat in the shade

Never tumble dry, never in direct sunlight, never iron — heat destroys synthetic fibres.

FAQ Guide

Your questions about Bahr-Bikini.

How long does a Bahr-Bikini last?

With proper care, a Bahr-Bikini used 2 to 3 times a week all year round retains its properties for 2 to 3 seasons. Summer-only use can extend its life to 5–6 years.

Will the burkini shrink in the wash?

No, if you follow the care instructions. Technical jersey in polyester/polyamide does not shrink at 30°C. Always avoid the tumble dryer and high temperature washing.

How do I remove sunscreen stains?

Apply a little diluted washing-up liquid directly onto the stain, leave for 15 minutes, then wash normally at 30°C. Always avoid hot water which would set the stain.

Does UPF certification degrade over time?

Very gradually after many washes. Rinsing immediately after each use significantly slows this process. A fabric in good visual condition maintains very high UV protection.
